Forklift Operator Certification Guide
Here’s what employers and operators need to know about initial certification, hands-on evaluations, refresher training, and easy ways to schedule on-site sessions around production.
What Certification Includes
- Classroom session covering safe operation, site hazards and daily inspections.
- Written test to verify understanding of rules and best practices.
- Hands-on evaluation on your equipment and layout to confirm practical skills.
- Certificates & wallet cards issued for your records.
When to Re-Evaluate or Refresh
- At least every 3 years as a best practice.
- After an incident or near-miss, unsafe operation, or significant changes in equipment or environment.
On-Site Training Works Better
- Operators train on your trucks, loads and aisles—skills transfer immediately.
- We can run multiple short sessions across shifts to minimize downtime.
- Site-specific topics: docks, pedestrians, ramps, battery rooms, LP storage, attachments, narrow aisles.
How We Run a Typical Session
- Kickoff & safety review: expectations, PPE, site hazards.
- Classroom: stability triangle, load centers, traveling/stacking, visibility, spotter communication.
- Walk-around inspection: operators perform daily checks with a provided checklist.
- Practical operating course: traveling, turning, stacking to height, precision placement, shutdown.
- Written test & debrief: missed questions reviewed, improvement plan noted.
- Documentation: sign-in, tests, evaluations, certificates and wallet cards delivered.
Deliverables: sign-in sheets, written tests, practical evaluations, certificates/wallet cards and supervisor checklists—with optional annual reminders for refreshers.
How to Prepare Your Facility
- Pick a clear area for the practical course and a quiet space for classroom/testing.
- Have the trucks fueled/charged and safe to operate; provide typical pallets/loads.
- Share shift windows and headcount so we can build sessions around production.

How long does training take?
Most groups complete classroom + hands-on in half a day; larger or multi-equipment groups can be split across shifts.
Do new hires and temps need the same process?
Everyone who operates a powered industrial truck should be evaluated and trained for your site and equipment.
Can we include pedestrian awareness?
Yes—dock traffic, pedestrians, spotter communication, blind corners and high-bay racking are common modules.
